Obituary for Jane Byerwalter

Byerwalter, Jane Age 90

Jane Frances (Woelkers) Byerwalter of Orland Park, IL passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 15, 2020. Born in Chicago, IL on December 1, 1929, she was 90 years young. She attended St. Francis de Paula Elementary School (class of 1943), Longwood Academy (class of 1947, after winning a full scholarship by achieving the highest score in an 8th grade Mathematics contest) and Chicago Teachers College (class of 1951).

In 1950 she met George Byerwalter at a church dance at St. Sabina’s. Both from the ‘South Side’, each having Irish mothers and German fathers. They shared a middle name (albeit with different spellings). They each had a strong sense of family, knew the value of hard work and strong faith. At the time, Jane was an elementary school teacher in Chicago (she taught off and on for 35 years). While engaged to George and teaching, she took on a part time job in the Notions Department at Marshall Field’s on State Street in order to utilize the employee discount when she purchased her wedding dress there for the princely sum of $125. On June 28, 1952 they married at St. Francis de Paula. Between 1953 and 1966 she and George welcomed seven children to their family. Moving first to Dolton and, when that house was bursting at the seams, to South Holland. Jane and George enjoyed each other’s company for over 50 years.

Kind, generous and loving mother of Barbara (Catherine Mason) Ryan, Jean (Tom) Simcoe, Patricia (Dan) Stecich, George (Therese, nee Gallagher) Byerwalter, Joann (Tim) Prendergast, Gail (Mark) Lutz and the late Nancy J. (Mike) McHugh. Devoted grandmother of 20 and the late Jayne McHugh, great grandmother of 8. Beloved sister of the late Lois (late Robert) Thompson, special cousin of Joann Vais.

Special thank you to Helen Waychas and Raquel Francisco for their tender, caring administrations to Jane these past months. Helen and Raquel were Jane’s earth angels.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Misericordia (Account #1119A, 6300 N. Ridge, Chicago, IL 60660) in Jane’s name.

In memory of Jane, eat a cookie (or two) and don’t feel even a little bit guilty.
