Obituary for Thomas Francis Xavier "Tut" Harvey

Harvey, Thomas Francis Xavier “Tut”

Thomas Francis Xavier Harvey passed away peacefully October 4, 2017.

Tom was born on October 13, 1923 in Greenwich Village, New York, the third of ten children born to the late Thomas and Nora (nee O'Connell) Harvey.

Tom was baptized at St. Veronica’s and attended school at the neighboring parish of St. Bernard’s. In June 1941, he graduated from The School of Commerce and enlisted in the U.S. Army the following year.

A proud WWII veteran, he was trained as a radio operator and spent time in the Philippines, New Guinea, and Australia.

While stationed in the Philippines, he wrote to his mother requesting her to take his high school transcripts to St. John’s for admissions review. He attended University of Manila to complete prerequisites prior to matriculating to St. John’s University where he earned a degree in Economics.

His career in corporate insurance was put on hold when he was recalled into active service for the Korean War. He was able to transfer into an engineering company and was sent to Austria, where he inspected bridges and other structures for WWII bomb damage and developed a lifelong affinity for German food.

While working for the Royal Insurance Company, he was transferred to Chicago where he met one Patsy Fagan.

Tom is survived by his daughter Eileen Alana Harvey; granddaughter Emma Harvey; his daughter-in-law Julie Harvey (nee Ross); his siblings Clare Curtin, Cathleen Harvey, and William Harvey; numerous nieces and nephews; and his faithful poodle, Coco Bean.

He is predeceased by his wife Patricia (nee Fagan); his son Thomas Francis Harvey; and siblings John T. Harvey, Veronica Harvey, Phyllis Harvey, Theresa Toomey, Margaret McCrorken, and Irene Bitetto.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 55 Cranberry Street, Brooklyn Heights, NY.

Interment will be Friday, October 27th, 12:30 at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, Illinois. 708-857-7878
