Obituary for Robert J. Ready

Robert J. Ready died peacefully at home in Palos Heights surrounded by loving family on January 5, 2015. Bob was known for his devotion to family and faith and for a desire to share the many blessings he received.
He was born December 16, 1925, in Chicago, the son of Marie and Charles Ready and younger brother to Charlotte. He grew up in the Beverly neighborhood and graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1943. He served in World War II as a U.S. Navy Airman and graduated from Loyola University after the war. His life’s work was in road construction. He served as president for more than 20 years of the company his grandfather founded. In the booming decades of the 1950s through the early 1980s, bright red Ready Paving & Construction Company trucks heralded the growth and development of Chicago and the southwest suburbs.
In 1957, Bob married his beloved wife, Rita, with whom he spent the next 49 years. Shortly after marrying, they moved to Palos Park, where they raised six children. His family was his pride and joy. Bob and Rita traveled the world together and spent many winters at their home in Scottsdale, AZ. In 1997, he and Rita took their children and their families on an unforgettable 10-day tour of Ireland, the best of many trips and family vacations. He was always interested in and proud of the accomplishments of his 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Bob was president of the Illinois Road Builders Association from 1980-1981 and served as Palos Park’s Road Commissioner from the mid-1970s to early 1980s. A devout Catholic, he supported Catholic education as a member of St. Michael’s school board and through generous contributions to St. Ignatius’s building and scholarship funds. He served on the committee responsible for construction of Our Lady of the Woods, where he was a parishioner.
Bob’s generosity was felt in ways large and small, from providing a family in need with a job or tuition to sharing a quick joke and a smile with people he came across every day. He had an indomitable spirit, optimism and love of life.
Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife Rita (nee Byrnes), dear parents, Charles and Marie Ready (nee Curran) and sister Charlotte (the late William Riley). He is survived by devoted children Jane (Gerald Luckman), Julie (Walter Kay), Kevin (Cathleen), Robert Jr., Liz (Steve Mills) and Rosemary (Scott Logue); cherished grandchildren Kevin (Kimberly), Michael (Rachel), Patrick (Betsy), Sheila (Michael), Margaret (Matthew), Marita (Scott), Thomas (Christine), Meg (Nick), Brendan, Caroline, Michael, Jack, Ellen, Margaret and Natalie; 20 great-grandchildren.and many fond nieces and nephews.
