Richard Joseph Moran was born on July 3, 1928 to Joseph Patrick Moran and Rosalie Rice Moran. He prided himself on being the first baby baptized in the new parish church of St. Adrian.
Richard attended St. Adrian Grammar School until the family moved out of the neighborhood and he transferred to Eberhardt Public School where he was double promoted. Later the family returned to the parish of St. Adrian, but he continued in the McKay Public School. In fact, Joe Moran, a bricklayer, moved his family quite a bit depending on his employment status and therefore his ability to make the rent payment. Joe refused to accept government assistance. Later he became a Chicago police officer and retired as a police sergeant.
Joe wanted Richard to follow in his footsteps by attending St. Rita High School, but Rich was a basketball player and St. Rita did not have a basketball team. Joe allowed Richard to attend Harper H.S. as long as he did not bring home an Italian girl which is exactly what he did in the form of Marilyn Mazziotti. Richards or “Bugs” as he was known, graduated high school in 1947 and became an apprentice brick layer until he was drafted into the Army on October 22, 1949. In whatever job he was assigned, he quickly distinguished himself and moved into leadership positions. His Army service ended after two years and he began laying brick. Later he worked for Com Ed downtown for about one year but returned to brick laying. By 1954 the on and off romance with Marilyn was on for good and they were married on May 15, 1954 just about the same time he became a Chicago Police Officer. His first assignment was the 10th District, 23rd & Damen Patrolman, Tact Sgt. Area 2 Homicide, Lt. serving Gang Crimes West. A total of 36 years.
Aside from policing, Bugs supported his family working on a moving truck on the side, unloading trucks on a dock and boat security at Calumet Park Harbor. He retired from the CPD in October 1987.
After Marilyn died in 1988, Bugs moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1990 where he met his companion for the rest of his long life, Donna Chappell. He made his home there and acquired many new friends. Life was good. Bugs was blessed with a long and fruitful life with many good friends. He and his particularly sarcastic humor will be greatly missed.
