Obituary for REV. MONSIGNOR WILLIAM E. McKAY

Rev. Monsignor William E. McKay

Died peacefully at home in Mesa, Arizona on Wednesday, March 17, 2010. He was born August 2, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois.

Beloved son of the late Charles & Kathleen nee Nolan McKay.
Loving brother of the late Kathleen Mary McKay.
Dear cousin to many.

Visitation Wednesday 8:30 a.m. until time of prayers 10:00 a.m. at the Robert J. Sheehy & Sons Funeral Home, 9000 W. 151st Street, Orland Park to St. Michael Church, Mass 10:30 a.m.

Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

Monsignor McKay was ordained May 7, 1949 at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, IL for the Archdiocese of Chicago. He spent the next 23 years in various pastoral assignments which included St. Lawrence and Holy Rosary in Chicago. In 1960 Monsignor McKay was assigned to St. Bartholomew Parish, San Manuel, AZ, Most Holy Trinity Parish, Phoenix, AZ, Our Mother of Sorrows, Tucson, AZ, St. Ambrose Parish, Tucson, AZ, St. Rose of Lima, Safford, AZ and St. Agnes Parish, Phoenix, AZ. In 1972 Monsignor McKay was notified that he was to be the Pastor of a new parish to be established in east Mesa. He became the Founding Pastor of All Saints Catholic Church in Mesa and remained there until his retirement on July 1, 1995.

Rev. McKay was invested as Monsignor February 15, 2002, appointed Director of Catholic Cemeteries in 1989, appointed to the Personnel Board in 1980 and appointed Treasurer of Priest Assurance Association in 1977. Monsignor McKay continued serving his Church as Pastor Emeritus for the next 13 years. He will always be remembered for his light-hearted Irish wit and his ability to make people smile. His loving and caring nature was evidenced by the many people who loved him. He loved our Lord and wanted people to learn more about Him through the thousands of books he gave away throughout the years. He started and maintained 5 libraries; one library in North Branch, Michigan, two libraries in South Carolina, one library at All Saints Catholic Church in Mesa, Arizona and a library in Denton, Nebraska for the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter.

Surely when he opened his eyes to greet our Lord he was met with that wonderful phrase “Welcome, good and faithful servant," to whom Monsignor would have replied, “Thank you Lord, you have a peachy day.”
