Obituary for Norman E. Reiher

Norman “Norm” E. Reiher

On the morning of February 21, 2016, Norm passed away after losing his final battle with chronic congestive heart failure. Norm was comforted by his wife and daughter, Lisa, at his home in Algonquin, IL at the time of his passing. Norm was 87 years old.

Norm Reiher was born in Blue Island on October 9, 1928. He was the second child of Amelia and Louis Reiher, Sr.

After growing up on his family’s farm, Norm served in the US Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. Upon his return, he took in everything life had to offer including starting his own businesses and traveling the world with friends and family – why not cruise up the Amazon River?

Only when he met his one true love, Sheila, did he finally settle down at the tender age of 42. Norm was married to Sheila A. Reiher (Bredesen) on May 8, 1971; they were married 44 years. Norm became an instant father when he adopted Lisa and Gary, and a year later their family grew when Julie was born. He was a loving father to his three children, always teaching and nurturing them the best he knew how – which happened to be pretty great!

Although no longer a world traveler, Norm was always up for an adventure with his family. Whether it was taking his children for a neighborhood walk in the Chicago Blizzard of 1979 or helping his daughter try to hatch an egg she found, Norm never lacked ideas that kept his family amused.

When not at home, Norm spent his days as an entrepreneur and active member of the community. Dressed in his “ladies best” at a Lion’s Club fundraiser, Norm and his friends had the audience rolling with laughter. As a general contractor and bank director, he played a part in the success of many others and also grew his friendships. Most who crossed his path regarded him as an honest, kind, and fair man – loved and cherished by so many.

This is the legacy he leaves with his children, his wife, and those who knew him best: No matter your position in life, the respect, thoughtfulness, and love you give to others will return to you tenfold.

Norm, you forever have our love tenfold and tenfold more.

Norm is lovingly remembered by his family …
Beloved husband to Sheila (nee Bredesen).
Devoted father of Lisa (Alan) Walters, the late Gary, and Julie (Brett) Atwood.
Proud grandfather of Connor, Trevor, Linnea, Gary, Nicole, Jon, and Gabriel.
Cherished great grandfather of 8.
Loving brother of Edward (Lois) Reiher, Louis Jr. (Jeannette) Reiher, and Bernice (Donald) Duehr.
Dear uncle of many nieces and nephews.
