Obituary for Magdalen "Midge" Ward

Magdalen “Midge” Ward (nee Wingering)
age 90, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on July 8, 2018 in Chicago, IL. Midge was born to Emil and Rose (nee Moeller) Wingering on April 4, 1928. She attended St. Sabina Catholic School and graduated from Mercy High School in 1946. Midge earned her B.S. at the Mercy School of Nursing at St. Xavier College in 1950. She was an active member of the alumni associations of both Mercy and St. Xavier.
Midge married Kenneth “Ken” Ward in 1952 and, together, they raised their eight children in St. Bede the Venerable Parish on the southwest side of Chicago. Her strong Catholic faith was demonstrated through her actions: in addition to her volunteer work in several parish ministries, she volunteered at The Cradle Adoption Agency in Evanston caring for newborns, several organizations dedicated to helping the homeless, and served as a Court Advocate for the Chicago Police Department. She combined her love of sewing and knitting with her love of children by making baptismal bibs for the parishioners and hats and blankets for premature babies. She also made winter hats and scarves for active duty servicemen.
Midge worked for many years as an office nurse for Dr. Robert Dressel and Dr. Thomas Joseph of Kedzie Medical. She was a Certified Nursing Program instructor at City College of Chicago (Daley College). A life-long learner, Midge enrolled in adult tap dancing, basic car maintenance, guitar, and upholstery classes. Midge believed in hard work and having fun; always willing to help a neighbor, share a laugh, or offer a potato chip cookie. She always gave everything she could and asked for nothing in return.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her son, Kenneth Michael “Mike.”
She is survived by her children: Diane (Pat) Mendoza; Martin; Judith (Kevin Noon); Richard “Dick”; Thomas (Michelle Trueblood); Karen (Joseph) Slagle; Marjorie (Michael) Rice. Midge is also survived by her sister, Loretta Maddix, and her grandchildren: Joe and Anna Ward; Jami Mendoza; Kendall, Jaden, and Isaac Rice; and Nicholas Slagle. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
Special thanks to the caring staff at Little Company of Mary Hospital Hospice Care. Midge and her family were blessed by your empathetic care and guidance.
