Obituary for Loren A. Jahn

Loren Arthur Jahn, 93, of Palos Heights, Illinois, passed away on
February 21st, 2019, from complications associated with an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Loren was born on August 28, 1925, to Reinhardt G. and Clara (Grawey) Jahn. Loren graduated from Morgan Park High School in 1943. Loren attended Roosevelt College and Northwestern University seeking a Degree in Music. He never finished his degree because he started working at the family business, Chicago Metallic Corporation. Loren was involved in the family business from 1941 until its sale in 2013. He continued to visit the business after the sale so that he could keep in touch with the employees he always cared for deeply.

Loren married Jane Hanke on January 13, 1951. Loren and Jane grew up on the same city block in Beverly, but did not start dating until 1950 when they became close while singing in the choir at Bethany Union Church.

Loren became a devoted follower of Christian Science in the late 1940’s. The metaphysical teachings of its founder, Mary Baker Eddy, resonated deeply for him. Loren was a very active member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Palos Park, Illinois, for many years. He volunteered at their Reading Room and was a board member for many years. Loren was a chaplain at several correctional and mental health facilities for many years. To the end, he continued to send monthly bible lessons to those still incarcerated.

Loren had many hobbies over the years. He loved the outdoors. Loren was a longtime member of the Iowa Mountaineers and did many climbing trips with them. Loren loved photography, as evidenced by the great number of photo albums at his home. He enjoyed backpacking as well. Loren enjoyed taking his children and their friends on weekend hikes in the Cook County Forest Preserves. He also enjoyed making small electronic appliances known as “Heath Kits” in the evenings.

Loren enjoyed spending time at the family’s second home on the Straits of Mackinaw near Cheboygan, Michigan. During winters there, Loren and Jane developed a love for snowmobiling. They took many snowmobile trips, even to Iceland and Russia! They also enjoyed taking hiking trips. This started a passion for travel. Jane and Loren become world travelers for many years.

Loren and Jane also enjoyed and supported the arts. They spent many hours going to different concerts, plays, and operas. In particular Loren supported The Lyric Opera of Chicago and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Loren was also very generous to many charities over the years. He was a huge supporter of Care, The Access Fund, The Sierra Club, and many others too numerous to list. Loren also supported many charities through his 45-year membership at the Union League Club of Chicago.

Above all, Loren was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Loren is preceded in death by his brother, Reinhardt H. (Shirley) and his brother-in-law Carl (Ellie) Hanke. He is survived by wife, Jane, of 68 years; his brother Martin D. (Patricia); his six children Loren D. Jahn, Paul A. Jahn, Peter G. Jahn (Patricia), Louise M. LaRue (William), David E. Jahn (Colleen), and Martha J. Martin (Lee); his ten grandchildren Sarah Lata (Mike), Brenda Uraski, Margaret Jahn Wilkoff (Jake), Daniel Jahn, Marcy Jahn, Laura Hurckes (Jerad), Erin Jahn, Peter Jahn, Emily Jahn, Trevor Jahn, Rachel Martin, and Elise LaRue; his six great grandchildren Adilynne, Jake, Henry, Aubrey, Evan, and Jensen; and many nieces and nephews.

Loren will be remembered for many wonderful qualities; especially his willingness to serve others, his compassion for those less fortunate, his great sense of humor, and his commitment to his many endeavors.
