Obituary for James E. O'Donnell

James E. O’Donnell, 82, died August 9, 2021, with his loving family by his side in Orland Park, Illinois.
A visitation will be held on Friday August 13, 2021, from 3:00-9:00 p.m. at Robert J. Sheehy & Sons Funeral Home in Orland Park. A funeral will be held on Saturday August 14, 2021. The prayer service begins at 9:15 a.m. at the Robert J. Sheehy and Sons Funeral Home followed by a procession. A Catholic Mass for Jim will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Woods Church also in Orland Park. Masks are required at church. Following Mass, Interment will be held at Good Shepherd Cemetery.

Jim was born on June 21, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois to Eugene and Jennie O’Donnell. He grew up in a house his father, a Chicago firefighter, built on Wood Street. His parents instilled in him a strong Catholic faith. Jim loved to tell his sons and grandchildren stories of his adventures with his neighborhood buddies and playing in the neighborhood and the forest preserves. Jim attended St. Ethelreda School and then high school at Mount Carmel where he found many life-long friends with whom he stayed in close touch. He moved to Dubuque, Iowa to attend Loras College where he was involved in variety shows, majored in business administration, and made more life-long friends. When Jim found a friend, they became a friend for life and he treasured those friendships.

After graduating from Loras College, Jim moved back to Chicago where he met the love of his life, Betty, at a Nomad Ski Club get together. He adored his pretty Betty (as he referred to her daily) and loved the fact that he proposed three months after he met her and she said yes. Ever the dynamic duo, Betty and Jim married on August 21, 1965, and they proudly and happily raised two sons, Jimmy and Mike. Family dinners were always lots of fun and they made wonderful family memories, traveling and camping. Jim loved getting together with friends and family and always found a reason to celebrate life with birthdays, dinners, graduations and holidays.

Jim and his childhood friend were owners of Gregg Communications. He was a technology pioneer in the Chicago area as they sold many of the first complex telephone systems in Chicago. His interests included family, his kid’s and grandkid’s sporting and other events, friends, fishing, photography and videography, joking (all of the time) and faith.

Jim, is the beloved husband of Betty (nee Englund); loving father of two sons, James (Kimberly) O’Donnell and Michael (Lisa) O’Donnell; proud grandfather of Sarah, Ryan, Madison and Jameson O’Donnell, dear brother of Marilyn (Bill) McGuire; dear brother-in-law of Dolly (Jack) McCarthy; and kind uncle of Mary Ellen (Paul) and Sue Ann.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Jennie O’Donnell, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dorothy and John Englund and many loved family members and friends. His family is comforted to know that they were all there to welcome him to eternal life.

Memorials may be sent to Mount Carmel. The family would like to thank Palos Health Hospice Care for helping with his transition.

We invite you to leave a memory about Jim on Jim’s Tribute Wall; your stories will bring joy and comfort to his family.
