HENRY, IRENE C. FOUNDER AND VOLUNTEER ON BEHALF OF THE MENTALLY RETARDED. FAMILY & FRIENDS WILL GATHER FOR A FUNERAL MASS FOR LONG-TIME PALOS HEIGHTS & OAK LAWN, IL RESIDENT IRENE HENRY ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 2009 AT 10:30 A.M. AT ST. GERMAINE CHURCH, 9711 S. KOLIN AVENUE, OAK LAWN, IL WITH INTERMENT TO FOLLOW AT HOLY SEPULCHRE CEMETERY. MRS. HENRY DIED ON DECEMBER 30TH AT THE AGE OF 91. SHE WAS PREVIOUSLY ACTIVE IN THE ST. GERMAINE'S WOMAN'S CLUB, MIDLOTHIAN COUNTRY CLUB WOMAN'S CLUB AND INDIAN WELLS COUNTRY CLUB WOMAN'S CLUB, INDIAN WELLS, CA. MRS. HENRY WAS BORN TO ALBERTINA & JOSEPH ZILLIGAN IN CHICAGO IN 1917. SHE GRADUATED FROM LONGWOOD ACADEMY IN 1935 AND THE CHICAGO COLLEGE OF COMMERCE IN 1937. SHE MARRIED H. ALBERT HENRY IN 1937 AND SUBSEQUENTLY HAD TWO CHILDREN, ALBERT JOSEPH & JUDITH ANN, WHO WAS A DOWN'S SYNDROME CHILD. HER SON, ALBERT JOSEPH, RECEIVED A BS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING FROM BRADLEY UNIVERSITY AND AN MBA FROM NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, KELLOGG GRADUATE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT. IN 1942, DOCTORS ADVISED MRS. HENRY TO PLACE HER MENTALLY RETARDED DAUGHTER IN AN INSTITUTION. HOWEVER, AGAINST THE CONVENTIONAL WISDOM OF THE TIME, MRS. HENRY LOVINGLY CARED FOR HER DAUGHTER AT HOME WHERE JUDY THRIVED. IN 1950, MR. & MRS. HENRY ALONG WITH FIVE OTHER PARENTS OF RETARDATES HELPED FORM RETARDED CHILDREN'S AID (RCA) AND IT BECAME A BLESSING FOR SO MANY OF THESE SPECIAL CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES. JUDITH ANN ATTENDED RCA WORKSHOPS ON A DAILY BASIS UNTIL HER DEATH AT HOME AT AGE 50. RCA MERGED WITH THE CHICAGO ASSOCIATION FOR RETARDED CITIZENS (CARC) IN 1952, AND MR. HENRY BECAME THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE FUND AND FOUNDATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RETARDED FROM ITS INCEPTION UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT IN 1984. WHEN MRS. HENRY FIRST BEGAN HER VOLUNTEER WORK IN 1950, THE RETARDED CHILDREN'S AID SERVED FIVE MENTALLY RETARDED CHILDREN DAILY. BY THE TIME SHE RETIRED FROM HER VOLUNTEER WORK IN THE 1990's, 1400 MENTALLY DISABLED PEOPLE WERE BEING SERVED DAILY AT SEVENTEEN WORKSHOP FACILITIES THROUGHOUT CHICAGO, BEING PICKED UP AT THEIR HOMES EACH MORNING AND RETURNED AT NIGHT. AT THE WORKSHOPS, ATTENDEES WERE TRAINED AND PERFORMED TASKS DAILY FOR BUSINESSES THAT CONTRACTED WITH CARC TO OUTSOURCE WORK TO BE PERFORMED BY THE RETARDATES. MRS. HENRY WAS ACTIVE IN FUND RAISING AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT FOR FORTY YEARS, AS WELL AS ASSISTING IN NEW WORKSHOP SITE ACQUISITION FOR THE FOUNDATION IN CONJUNCTION WITH MR. HENRY'S EFFORTS, WHO WAS AT THE TIME MANAGER OF REAL ESTATE AT PHILLIPS PETROLEUM COMPANY AND WAS IN CHARGE OF SITE ACQUISITION FOR CARC. MRS. HENRY WAS ALSO A FOUNDING CONTRIBUTOR TO THE FOUNDATION FOR THE RETARDED OF THE DESERT IN PALM DESERT, CA IN 1980. SHE IS SURVIVED BY HER SON ALBERT J. HENRY AND DAUGHTER-IN-LAW JOANNE M. HENRY BOTH OF CHICAGO. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, DONATIONS MAY BE MADE TO THE CHICAGO ASSOCIATION FOR RETARDED CITIZENS, 8 SOUTH MICHIGAN AVENUE, SUITE 1700, CHICAGO, IL 60603.
