Duggan, Grace E. (nee Cloonan)

Beloved wife of the late Thomas J. Duggan.
Loving mother of Ellen Dybala, Thomas W. (Linda) Duggan, James (Madonna) Duggan, Eileen (Steve) Klinkert, and William (Gayle) Duggan.
Dear grandmother of Beth, Claire (Gary), Julie (Russell), James (Stephanie), Jeanine (Thomas), Patrick (Carolyn), Matthew, Sean (Samantha), Elyse (David) and Thomas.
Cherished great-grandmother of Megan, James Patrick, Sarah, Sydney, Connor, Logan, Lucas, Alex, Andrew, Christian, and Tommy.
Fond sister of the late William and late Raymond Cloonan.

Grace Cloonan Duggan, 101 years old, joined her late husband of over 60 years, Thomas J. Duggan, and their beloved dog, Holly, on Sunday, August 25, 2019. No words could describe how her lively spirit & wonderful sense of humor touched so many lives. As the “heart” of the Duggan Family, she was a loving & devoted mother to her 5 children, a cherished grandmother to her 10 grandchildren & a dear great-grandmother to her 11 great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful friend & confidant to many people throughout her life.

Grace Ellen was born on October 14, 1917 in Seattle, Washington as the oldest of three children to Thomas Francis & Florence Irene (Dwyer) Cloonan. At the age of four, her family moved to Chicago. She attended Saint Ailbe’s Parish School and graduated from Mercy High School in 1936.

She met her husband, Tom, through high school friend and future sister-in-law, Helen Duggan. After they married in September 1939, Grace & Tom started their family & later purchased a bungalow on 9153 Blackstone Avenue. During those years, with Grace’s welcoming & gracious presence, the Duggan home was often the center of activities not only for their children, but to extended family members, neighbors and friends. She & Tom would later move to Chicago Heights and then to Orland Park.

In addition to supporting her husband’s work with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen & Enginemen and later the United Transportation Union, Grace participated in a number of community & school activities, including volunteering at Saint James’ Hospital in Chicago Heights. After her husband’s retirement, Grace & Tom spent many winters in RV parks located in Florida and Arizona, where they enjoyed square dancing, fishing and other social events with other fellow retirees.

In addition to keeping track of current events and reading, Grace enjoyed watching sports, especially the Chicago Bears & White Sox and the Norte Dame Football team. She was also known for her terrific baking skills, especially her famous chocolate chip squares. In her later years, she was a beloved resident of Peace Memorial Village in Palos Park.
