Obituary for Fr. William B. Gubbins

Gubbins, Fr. William B.

Fr. Bill Gubbins, 92, Chicago archdiocesan priest ordained in 1955, died March 14 at Palos Hospital after suffering a stroke two days earlier. During his ministry Fr. Gubbins was associate pastor at Holy Name Cathedral, Our Lady of Knock, St. Nicholas, St. Sylvester, Our Lady of Mercy, Divine Providence, and St. Aloysius parishes. He was a member of the Chicago clergy personnel board. He was pastor of Queen of Martyrs and St. John Berchmans parishes. Following his retirement in late 1999, Fr. Gubbins was a resident at Old St. Patrick’s, from where he moved to St. Elizabeth Seton in Orland Hills. His great love for the priesthood kept him actively involved in ministry throughout his retirement.

In his ministry Fr. Gubbins organized adult scripture study, taught religion to elementary school children, led pilgrimages to the Holy Land and other religious sites, and baptized, married, and buried countless parishioners in the Chicago area. International travel, Spanish language study, classical music, reading and long walks, spectator sports and golf vacations, as well as the lifelong and devoted friendship of his parishioners sustained him throughout his ministry.

Fr. Gubbins is survived by his sisters Martha Slobig, Susan and Paula Gubbins, and his brother Peter Gubbins; his parents William and Helena Gubbins and brothers Michael and Roger Gubbins predeceased him. Nieces and nephews include Robert, Thomas, Dan, Kathleen Bergmann, Mary, Annemarie, James and Paul Slobig; Kevin, Patrick, and Timothy Gubbins and Maureen Hill; Cara Eckland, Moira, Peter and Dennis Gubbins; numerous grandnieces and nephews as well as great-grandnieces and nephews.
