Obituary for Donald Eldred Cory

Donald Eldred Cory
passed away on July 20, 2017 at the age of 85. He was born in Chicago, Illinois. For the past thirty years, he split his time between his homes in Palos Hills, Illinois and Ft. Myers, Florida. He retired from Sears Roebuck, where he worked as a display carpenter, for over 30 years. He is predeceased by his wife, Jeanette Cory; his parents, Donald E. Cory Sr. and Blanche Roepke Johnson and brother, Robert Eldon Cory.

Donald (or Duke as he was known by his family), was a past Post Commander of the American Legion Mount Greenwood Post #844. Donald severed as Post Commander ten times during his sixty year membership. In 2016, the American Legion Post #844 building was sold. The proceeds, from the sale were used to erect and donate a monument which pays tribute to United States military branches. The monument is located at 111th Street and Kedzie Avenue in Chicago, Illinois.

As a member of the United States Navy, Donald served aboard the U.S.S. Salem. He continued to attend annual functions aboard the U.S.S. Salem; the Flagship of the 6th Fleet. In 1994, the U.S.S. Salem became part of the Naval Ship Building Museum in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Don was a member of the Elks Club #2254 in Oak Lawn, Illinois for thirty years.
Donald is survived by his sister, Patricia Davies-Brown of Scottsdale, Arizona, sixty-one nieces, nephews and family members throughout the United States.
Donald will be interred with military honors at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois at 1:15 p.m. on Monday, August 14, 2017.
